| Pavement
construction, embankment, trench back filling etc., are but a few types
of projects where the measurement of both natural and re-compacted density
and moisture content must be taken continuously. Two or more basic forms
of density determination are in constant use, the first and possibly the
simplest using a core cutter of known volume driven into the soil by a rammer.
The cutter is dug out, trimmed and the soil inside weighed and dried for
a moisture and density check. |

SOIL
DENSITY :IS 2720 (XIV;XXVIII & XXIX)
This is used for the determination in situ of dry
density of natural or compacted fine grained soil, free from aggregates.
A cylindrical cutter is used to extract a sample of the soil with the
help of a dolly and rammer. From the weight, density and moisture, the
dry density of the soil is readily calculated.
It consists of Cylindrical core cutter made of steel, steel dolly provided
with a lip to enable it to be located on top of the core cutter. Rammer
with steel rod. |

PYCNOMETER
This is used for the determination of the moisture
content of soil as percentage of its weights and specific gravity of
soil particles and aggregates smaller than 10mm. It consists of a 1 Kg.
jar with plastic cone, locking ring and synthetic rubber seal.

DENSITY APPARATUS
This equipment is used for the determination of
the relative density of cohesion less free draining soils and meets the
essential requirements of IS:2720 (Part XIV).It consists of a vibrating
table, cylindrical metal unit moulds guide sleeve, surcharge base plate,
surcharge weights Dial gauge holder, Calibration bar.
