Particle Size Distribution
Particle size distribution also known as Grading Analysis or Mechanical Analysis is the separation of a soil into different size fractions expressed as a percentage total sample by weight. The results of a particle size analysis have importance in determining the types of grading, in classifying soils into various groups by several classification system, predicting many physical properties, ascertaining possibility of frost action, designing of graded filters, in selection of grouting materials, designing of cement and asphalt concrete mixes and in solving other engineering problems.
The distribution of grain or particle size larger than 75 microns is carried out by separating into various fractions by wet or dry sieving through standard specified sieves. Determination of the distribution of grain size by sieves
