Liquid, Plastic, Shrinkage, Limits
The behavior of soil is related to the amount of water in its structure. The boundaries in a soil's condition are called limits. The liquid limit is the water content at which the soil flows to close a standard groove when jarred in a liquid limit device. The plastic limit is the water content at which the soil begins to crumble when rolled into threads of 3mm diameter. The shrinkage limit is the water content just sufficient to fill the pores when the soil is at minimum dried volume.
Liquid Limit Device
In order to provide details for preparation stratiographical profiles from bore log data and for classification purposes Liquid Limits of representative soil samples are determined. As an inferential tests, the liquid limit data of soils enables soil engineers to correlate with mechanical properties of soils such as lower limit of shear strength and compressibility index of soils.

LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE (Hand Operated):IS 2720 (V) & 9259
The Liquid limit device consists of a hard rubber base carrying a sliding carriage assembly to which a brass cup is hinged The cup is raised and allowed to fall through a height of 1 cm by the help of a lead screw provided at the back of the sliding carriage. For ease of operation, the handle for rotating the cam has been provided on the right hand.
Complete with casagranda grooving tool and gauge block

LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE WITH COUNTER
Same as above but provided with a revolution counter which helps eliminate error in counting the number of blows and permits better attention to the observation of closing of the groove.
I 30.2
LIQUID LIMIT DEVICE WITH COUNTER AND MOTOR
Same as above but operated by a motor geared down to give approximately 120 r.p.m. suitable for operation on 220volts.
Single phase. Complete with casagranda grooving tool and gauge block.

CONE PENTROMETER
For determining the liquid limit of soils, this is specially useful for obtaining reliable and accurate results for those soils which have low plasticity index. The percentage moisture contents determined when a cone with half angle of 10 deg.30 deg. under a total sliding weight of 148gm penetrates 25mm give the liquid limit. As an inferential test empirical correlations have been developed to asses the shear strength of soils at liquid limit.
It consists of:
A stand over which a bracket carrying a moveable bearing rod with arrangement to clamp the bracket and the moveable rod at any desired position. A scale is provided to indicate the depth of penetration.
1.Cone; 2. Trough 50mm internal dia X 50mm high.
