Permeability
Permeability is the property of soil which permits flow of water through its inter connecting voids. Permeability is an important engineering property which governs the rate of settlement of saturated compressible soil layers and the rate of flow of Aquifer. Permeability is taken into account for pump-ing ground water, spacing well points for de-watering foundation sites for excavation, retention of water in reservoirs, design of dams and classifica-tion of soils to be used for various zones of embankments of dams and reser-voirs. There are two types of permeameters namely constant head and falling head permeameters. Falling head type are used for testing remolded undis-turbed fine grained soil. Constant head permeameters are used for coarse grained cohesion less soils

This apparatus is simple, sturdy and truly versatile and can be used for studying the permeability characteristics of all types of soil samples under different conditions in the laboratory as well as in the field . Both falling head and constant head tests can be performed and both remolded and undis-turbed specimens can be tested.
It consists of Permeability mould Top cap provided with water inlet and air release vent.

PERMEABILITY APPARATUS FOR SOIL :IS 2720 (XVII)
This apparatus is used for the laboratory determination of permeability of soils using a constant or a variable hydraulic head. This test is recommended for soils with coefficient of permeability. The maximum particle size which can be tested in the mould is 10mm.
It consists of a Metallic mould 100mm dia X 127.3mm high X 1000ml volume Extension collar,100mm dia X 60mm high. drainage base plate with a recess for a porous stone and with an outlet valve. Metallic clamping ring. Drainage cap (top plate with a recess for a porous stone and provided with an inlet valve and an air release valve) Dummy plate to serve as a false bottom during compaction. PERMEABILITY APPARATUS FOR SOIL UNIVERSAL TYPE :IS 2720 (XVII)
This apparatus can be used for both constant head type and falling head permeability studies on all types a soils including clay, silt. sand etc.
It consists of: Metallic mould 100mm dia x 127.3mm high x 1000ml volume. Extension collar,100mm dia x 60mm high. Drainage base plate with recess for porous stone and with an outlet valve. Drainage Cap. (Top plate with a recess for a porous stone and provided with inlet valve and an air release valve.) Dummy plate to serve as a false bottom during compaction.
Porous stone for drainage base plate. Porous stone for drainage cap. Wooden stand with nine glass tubes of 6mm, 10mm, 20mm, 25mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 75mm bore. One 75mm tube is provided with overflow arrangement and the other 75mm dia tube is provided with an air in take tube. Both these tubes are used for constant head tests. By inserting an open air brass tube at the top through a rubber stopper the bottom of the air tube will represent the atmospheric pressure. The constant head will be taken equal to the difference in levels between the discharge level in the bottom tank of the permeameter and the bottom portion of air tube.
