Consolidation and Compaction
The one dimensional consolidation test is an extremely important part of soil mechanics procedure. Soil of similar strength valves may exhibit widely varying consolidation characteristics. Representative samples taken from adjacent areas of a single site, when tested using the same odometer techniques, can clearly show that differential settlement conditions are liable to occur on site.

CONSOLIDATION APPARATUS {AS PER IS 2720 PART XV}
Some of the salient features of the apparatus are :

The standard outfit is supplied with a fixed ring type of con-solidometer cell for testing specimens. The unit is so designed that varying sizes of specimens can be tested by ordering the necessary accessories. The standard outfit is supplied with a set of weights to give a total pressure of 10 Kg/cm2, but additional weights can be ordered to reach the full capacity of 20 Kg/cm2.
Different Types Are :
I 10.1 Single Gang Consolidation Apparatus.
I 10.2 Three Gang Consolidation Apparatus.
I 10.3 Six Gang Consolidation Apparatus.
I 10.4 Spare Consolidation Cell Fixed Ring Type.

AUTOLEVEL CONSOLIDOMETER
In this apparatus, the loading lever maintains level automatically when weight are added to the hanger and as consolidation of the specimen takes place. Loading unit of maximum capacity 20 kg/scum’s micro switch arrangement with drive motor and reduction gearing has been provided together with a forward reverse switch.
Suitable for operation on 220/230 volts A.C

COMPACTION
Compaction control in the field is exercised by determining the moisture content and maximum dry density, quick evaluation of this is done by developing curves in the laboratory showing the relationship between moisture content Vs dry density and penetration resistance using proctor needles while conducting the standard compaction tests. This is further verified within reasonable limits by determining the moisture content by using Rapid Moisture Meters.

PROCTOR NEEDLE (SPRING TYPE) :
It consists of a body housing a spring, a plunger calibrated to read and a handle. Long stem graduated to indicate the depth of penetration and for use with needles of larger areas Small stem graduated to indicate the depth of penetration and for use with needles of smaller area. Needle point set comprising one each of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5 & 6 sq.cm.
Supplied in a polished wooden case.

I 12.1
PROCTOR NEEDLE (HYDRAULIC TYPE) :
This is identical to the spring type except that the penetration pressure on the needle is conveyed through a hydraulic system to a hydraulic pressure gauge. This system permits a greater control over the rate of penetration because of better visibility of load indication. It consists of bellow housing, casing, casing pipe and pressure gauge. Handle 2 Nos. small stem graduated to indicate the depth of penetration and for use with needles of smaller areas. Complete in a polished wooden case.

PROCTOR COMPACTION APPARATUS :IS 2720 (VIII)
The compaction test apparatus is used for establishing moisture density relationship and for determining optimum moisture content and maximum dry density with standard compactive effort assumed to be equivalent to that normally employed for soil compaction in the field with use of common rolling machines. The values obtained from the compaction test are used for drawing specification for compaction at site and for exercising compaction control in the field.
It consists of :
I 13.1 Compaction mould 100mm Dia X 127.3mm made of steel
I 13.2 Compaction mould 100mm Dia X 127.3mm made of Gun Metal
I 13.3 Compaction mould 150mm Dia X 127.3mm made of steel
I 13.4 Compaction mould 150mm Dia X 127.3mm made of Gun Metal.
I 13.5 Rammer 2.6 Kg X  310mm fall
I 13.6 Rammer 4.89Kg X  450mm fall.

ABBOT'S COMPACTION APPARATUS
Consists of a steel base, a steel tube and a steel rammer,51/2 lb.weight. The stem of the rammer is graduated in 10ths of an inch

I 15
AUTOMATIC COMPACTION APPARATUS
The principle of the machine is the falling by gravity of known weight through pre-determined distance on to a sample which can be either static or revolved automatically thereby setting up a method of compaction by controlled ramming. Two set of rammers are provided , one is the 2.6 kg. X 310 mm fall; and the second is the 4.89 kg. X 450mm fall.
