SHEAR APPARATUS:IS 2720 (XIII)
This machine is hand operated, size of specimen tested is 60mmX 25mm and
the rate of strain is adjusted by the speed of movement of the handle,
operated manually.
It consists of
Loading unit consisting of a load frame with V-strips on which shear box
housing rests, load yoke with direct and lever system for applying normal
load. Fixtures for proving ring, bracket for holding consolidation dial
gauge and manually operated lead screw for application of shear stress.
One shear box assembly is complete with :-
i. Two halves of the shear box.
ii. Two plain gripper plates.
iii. Two perforated gripper plates.
Iv Two porous stones.
v. One top loading pad
vi One base plate.
Vii Shear box housing accommodates the direct shear box, with two ball
roller strips.
Viii Specimen cutter for cutting 60 X 60 X 25mm specimens from larger
samples.
ix. One consolidation Dial gauge 0.01mm X 25mm.
x . One strain gauge 0.01mm X25mm.
xi. Set of weights to give a normal stress through lever.
xii. Proving ring of 200 kg.

SHEAR APPARATUS MOTORISED SINGLE SPEED
This is same as above but electrically operated to give a single constant
rate of strain. Suitable for operation on 220/230 volts AC. |

DIRECT
SHEAR APPARATUS MOTORISED 12 SPEED
This is also same as above but with 12 speeds to control the rate of strain.
Suitable for operation on 220/230 volts AC.

SHEAR |
| The
validity of strength test results carried out on soils which have a shear
strength in the order of 15 KN/m2 and lower is very largely dependent on
the care and skill with which the operator conducts his work. Disturbance
of these soft soil types, particularly the sensitive clays, takes place
when sample tubes are pushed into them. Experience shows that carefully
controlled com-pression test results can be related to figures obtained
by pushing a small vane into the soil, rotating at a controlled rate and
measuring the force required to maintain a maximum reading of resistance.

VANE SHEAR APPARATUS LABORATORY HAND OPERATED
Consists of a torque head adjustable in height
by means of a lead screw rotated by a drive wheel to enable the vane to
be lowered into the specimen. Rotation of the vane is by means of a hand
wheel which operates a worm gear arrangement turning the upper end of
a calibrated torsion spring. The vane shaft is attached through the hollow
upper shaft to a reset table pointer, which indicates the angle of torque
on a dial graduated in degrees. The dial reading multiplied by spring
factor gives the torque.

VANE
SHEAR APPARATUS FIELD TYPE
The apparatus is designed for conducting insitu
vane shear test from bottom of bore hole in saturated cohesive deposit
for determining their in place shearing resistance. It consists of a torque
application assembly mounted on a base. A gear wheel, which is marked
in degrees, holds a torque ring and is geared to crank. The torque ring
has a section cut from it and deforms as torque is applied and the deformation
is indicated by a dial gauge. A pointer is provided for registering the
rotation of the vane. A detachable stand is provided to anchor the instrument.
An attachment to securely hold the string of rods is provided.
The outfit comprises of :-
Torque applicator assembly complete with stand
Vane 37.5mm dia X 75mm high.
Vane 50mm dia X 100mm high.
Torque rod 0.6 meter long.
Rods, quick coupling type.
Dummy rod.
