Soil - Unconfined Compression

UNCONFINED COMP. TEST APP. PROVING RING TYPE . (HAND OPTD)
The apparatus is light weight, portable but sturdy, bench type and can be used in the laboratory, field and also in mobile laboratory. The specimen is positioned in between the two platens, one fixed to lead screw of the loading unit and the other held on to a adaptor through retaining spring of the proving ring. The adaptor is screwed on to the proving ring which is fixed to the cross head of the loading unit. The lower platen has concentric grooves for easy centering, The load is applied by the advancement of the lead screw. The axial load is indicated by the proving ring and the deformation is measured on a dial gauge which can be fixed to a bracket on one of the pillars of the load frame.
Load frame bench type, hand operated. The loading system consists of a screw jack with a detachable handle and the lower platen is moved up for applying the load. The top cross head is adjusting for height and carries a hexagonal adaptor for taking standard proving rings. A strain dial gauge bracket is provided, which is clamped to one of the pillars of the load frame plain platen with adaptor and steel ball. Supplied as above but without Proving Ring and Dial gauge

Unconfined Compression
The unconfined compression test of soil is an axial compression test in which the test specimen is provided with no lateral support while undergoing vertical compression. The test affords a quick and simple method for measuring the unconfined compression strength of a cohesive soil and indirectly shear strength which is generally taken to be one half of the unconfined compressive strength. The results of unconfined compression test are widely used for ascertaining the relative consistency of soils and sensitivity of clayey soils, for estimating ultimate bearing capacity of homogenous deposit of a clay and allowable load on a group of friction piles in clay, design of roads, runways and building construction.
